Australian Job Market Improves

Australian Job Advertisements Continue to Accelerate

The ANZ Job Advertisements Series research into the Australian employment market has shown a continued acceleration in Australian job advertisements over the past month.

Findings included:

  • The total number of jobs advertised in major metropolitan newspapers and on the internet rose by 6.0% in December to an average of 149,063 per week
  • In trend terms, growth in job advertisements demonstrated the fastest monthly growth rate since May 2007 and
  • Total job advertisements are now 19.1% higher than the cyclical trough recorded in July 2009

This is further evidence of the mildness of the downturn Australia experienced over the past 18 months and is an indicator of a slow and steady recovery.

The findings of ANZ’s research, which are reflected in other job surveys, such as the AiG’s three industry surveys, have strong implications for independent and sponsored skilled migration applicants – and come as DIAC considers the results of its MODL Review.

DIAC should make a strategic decision to open up immigration pathways now, so that Australia will have the skilled workforce it needs as one of the first western economies to recover from the global downturn.
