23  September changes already showing cracks

Calls are growing for the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) to overhaul its skilled migration program because of looming shortages.

The Australian Financial Review has reported that the Australian mining sector and the energy industry face severe shortages if the government does not urgently review the program.

Industry chiefs have warned that a skills shortage is just 12 to 18 months away.

The government has come under heavy criticism for changes made to priority processing for business visas on 23 September, with many applicants who were prepared to move to Australia within months, recently told they now face a further three years’ wait.
It was obvious at the time that the changes of 23 September were ill-considered and represented the worst type of policy-making on the run.  Hopefully, sanity will soon prevail and DIAC will restore state sponsorship to its rightful place as a visa processing priority.
